Obama Will Postpone Repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
Barack Obama will postpone a promised repeal of the Clinton era ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, which fell short of allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the U.S. armed forces. According to the Washington Times, two people advising the Obama transition team on the issue, say the President-elect will not move for months, and perhaps not until 2010, to ask Congress to end the military's decades-old ban on open homosexuals in the ranks.

N.Y. State Benefits for Gay Spouses Challenged
A mid-level New York State appeals court in Albany heard arguments this week in a challenge to the state's health benefit policy for spouses of gay state workers. The challenge was brought by taxpayers represented by the Alliance Defense Fund, a conservative group. The four plaintiffs, a group of taxpayers the AP says are not state workers, say whether to allow spousal benefits should be left up to the state legislature.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants Earns Top Marks in 2009 Corporate Equality Index
Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has announced that it earned the top rating of 100 percent in the 2009 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Kimpton joins the ranks of 259 other major U.S. businesses which receive top marks for their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees and consumers. The CEI rated 583 businesses in total, evaluating LGBT-related policies and practices including non-discrimination policies, transgender health benefits and domestic partner benefits.

Majority of Americans Agree that Transgender Employees Should be Judged by Job Performance, not Gender Identity
According to the 7th annual national Out & Equal Workplace Survey, seven out of ten heterosexual adults (71 percent) agree that how an employee performs at their job should be the standard for judging an employee, not whether or not they are transgender. The new survey also showed that nearly eight out of ten (79 percent) heterosexual adults strongly or somewhat agree that how an employee does his or her job should be the standard for judging an employee, not their sexual orientation.
